How does Santa Claus know who has been good? Scout elves fly to the North Pole every night in the weeks leading up to Christmas to report back to Santa. The next morning, they return to the family and hide in a new spot in the house. Can The Elf on the Shelf stay with the family all year round? After the holidays, the scout elves must return to the North Pole to start preparing for Christmas the following year. Once back at the North Pole, they share their stories with the other elves, undergo flight training, and help Santa and his wife. On special occasions, Santa gives the elves permission to return to the family's home for a short visit throughout the year. According to tradition, a scout elf loses its magic if it is touched by human hands. If they are safely inside their gift box, they can be moved normally. Once the elf has been adopted and given a name, it must not be touched.
