How does Santa Claus know who has been good? Scout elves fly to the North Pole every night in the weeks leading up to Christmas to report to Santa. The next morning, they return to the family and hide in a different spot in the house. Can The Elf on the Shelf stay with the family all year round? After the holidays, the scout elves must return to the North Pole to prepare for Christmas the following year. Once back at the North Pole, they share their stories with the other elves, engage in flight training, and help Santa and Mrs. Claus. On special occasions, Santa grants the elves permission to return to the family home for a short time throughout the year. According to tradition, a scout elf loses its magic if it is touched by human hands. If they are safely in their gift box, they can be moved normally. Once the elf has been adopted and given a name, it must not be touched.
