How does Santa Claus know who has been good? Scout elves fly to the North Pole every night in the weeks leading up to Christmas to report to Santa. Once back at the North Pole, they share their stories with the other elves, practice their flying, and help Santa and his wife. On special occasions, Santa gives the elves permission to return to the family's home for a brief visit throughout the year. According to tradition, a scout elf loses its magic if it is touched by human hands. They can be moved safely as long as they are in their gift box. Once the elf has been adopted and given a name, it must not be touched.
