Salmon undertake a long journey during their lives: they hatch from eggs in freshwater streams, grow into adult fish, and then swim to the ocean to spend the majority of their lives in salt water. When they are old enough to mate, they begin the long journey back to the streams where they hatched, where they will spawn and, in most cases, die.
