Educational toys for toddlers and preschoolers: how to choose

Oct 13, 2026 | Cadeautips | educatief | speelgoed | tips

Toddlers and preschoolers learn at lightning speed, and they do so primarily through play. Good educational toys match what your child is currently capable of while providing just the right amount of challenge. That’s how you choose toys that are fun while also supporting development.

What makes a toy educational?

Educational toys allow children to practice specific skills: counting, sorting, language, logical thinking, or fine motor skills. The most important thing is that your child actually enjoys it. If a toy is boring, it won't teach them much.

Toddlers (2-3 years)

  • Stacking and sorting: shape sorters and stacking towers train spatial awareness.
  • Simple puzzles: with large pieces and knobs. Take a look at our puzzles.
  • Role-playing: a play kitchen or shop stimulates language and imagination.

Preschoolers (4-5 years)

  • Building: with Plus-Plus or magnetic building tiles, preschoolers create their own designs.
  • Listening to stories: a story player like Faba lets children choose their own stories and songs.
  • First games: memory and other board games practice memory and taking turns.

Tips for choosing well

  1. Look at what your child currently likes to do and build on that.
  2. Choose open-ended toys that can be used in multiple ways: they grow along with your child.
  3. Less is more: rotate toys instead of offering everything at once.
  4. Join in every now and then. Playing together works best.
